The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is that joint that connects the lower jaw to the head. TMJ disorder, also called TMD or TMJ, occurs when the jaw joint becomes injured, stressed, or misaligned. This disorder may happen because of several factors, including stress, arthritis in the TMJ, trauma and injury to the head, or bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching).
If you suffer from frequent facial or jaw pain, you may be experiencing TMD. TMJ disorders can also cause:
- Inability to open your mouth wide
- A locked jaw
- Pain when biting and chewing
- Grinding, popping, or clicking sounds when you open and close your mouth
- Pain in the shoulders, neck, or ears
- Frequent headaches
Our dentist can determine the source of your TMD and recommend the needed treatment. Your individual treatment will depend on the severity and cause of the TMJ disorder. Your treatment may include a mouth guard or night guard, restorative dental treatments, surgery, or BOTOX injections.
